Beautiful nature, the sea, the way of life in the region have inspired some of the greatest Bulgarian artists.
Among the old masters are Boris Georgiev, Nikola Mihailov, Alexander Moutafov, Nikola Marinov, Atanas Mihov, Elena Karamihailova, Georgi Velchev and Ilia Petrov.
Boris Georgiev (1888-1962) was a disciple of Nikolai Ryorih. He travelled the world from India to America and painted portraits of some of the great personalities of his time - portraits of Einstein and Djavaharlal Neru are kept in his native town. The town art gallery in Varna is named after him.

Shoumen is the birthplace of the artists Nikola Mihailov (1876-1960), disciple of Ivan Murkvichka and a graduate of the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich, Germany, a recognised creator and master of the so called “situational portrait”; Alexander Moutafov (1879-1957), a graduate of the Art Academy in Turin, Italy, painted some of the most dramatic seascapes inspired by the coast of Varna. Elena Karamihailova (1875-1961) born in Shoumen, a graduate of the Art Academy in Munich, Germany, is the first Bulgarian lady-artist. The portraits of women she painted are unsurpassable in their psychological depiction.

Atanas Mihov (1879-1975) who was a teacher in Razgrad, established the realistic landscape in the Bulgarian painting.
Georgi Velchev (1891-1955) was born in Varna. He was a disciple of Bonnard and won the Crown of Italy Grand Prix. He depicted the fury of the sea storms and the stern beauty of the rocky coast.
250 paintings are kept in his house-museum. Hristo Kavarnaliev (1892-1951) specialised with Frank Schtuck. He too was impressed by the sea.

Among the contemporary artists who live and work in the region are Yordan Kisyov from Silistra, Vasil Karadimov from Razgrad, Dimitar Cholakov from Targovishte, Hristo Kralev and Georgi Demirev from Dobrich, the sculptors Mladen Mladenov and Rumen Mihailov from Shoumen.
Varna today is one of the art centres in Bulgaria. It is the venue of one of the most prestigious international exhibitions in this country - the Print Biennale which has already had 10 editions and continues to get together artists from all continents.
The Varna graphic art school, linked with the artistic phenomenon Vulcan, includes some of the leading contemporary artists in this country: Stoimen Stoilov who now works in Vienna, Toma Tomov - in the USA, Georgi Lechev, Vladimir Ivanov, Sasho Anastasov and Valeri Chakalov who work for European art galleries. Vanko Urumov and Milko Bozhkov are among the most renowned artists in the country, while Alyosha Kafedzhiyski and Plamen Bratanov are celebrated sculptors.
Varna is the home town of some of the most talented Bulgarian artistic photographers, among whom Rossen Donev and Garo Keshisyan are outstanding for their unrivalled talent and sense of beauty.
In the numerous private art galleries in Varna one can see works by young artists inspired by the Black Sea who depict the eternal truths of nature and man in the century of high technologies.
Works by sculptors and artists from the region are on show in many renowned art galleries and private collection all over the world.
