Balchik is situated 30 km north of Varna. Looking from the sea the town fascinates with its whiteness and amphitheatrical layout. The ancient Greeks of Miletus founded the town in the 5th century BC in the place of a Thracian settlement. They believed that the goddess of beauty Aphrodite was born out of sea foam here. For many centuries the local people have grown some of the best vine plantations in Bulgaria. That is why the new settlers called the town Dionysopolis after the god of wine and hilarity - their patron-saint Dionysus.

Balchik has the biggest harbour in the Dobrudja region. Every year thousands of tones of wheat are exported by sea. Tourists can spend their holidays at many small two-and three- star hotels offering all the amenities and comforts for a memorable rest and recreation.
