The
Strandja Nature Park
is a beautiful oasis of woods, rivers, caves, humid zones and a refuge for an extraordinary variety of plant and animal life.
The unique Strandja flora and fauna are products of a specific geographical situation that combines the influence of the Mid
European and Mediterranean climate with varied relief.
The wealth of plant life is a combination of plant species typical of the Mediterranean region, Asia Minor, the southern Black
Sea coast, Strandja and Stara Planina Mountains. The symbol of the mountain is the Strandja periwinkle that bursts into bloom
in May.
|
|
The park comprises the central Bulgarian area of the Strandja Mountains and part
of the Black Sea coast (between Tsarevo and the village of Rezovo). To the west it reaches up to the Golyamo Boukovo
Monastery.
Besides the wealth of plant and animal life, some of which is unique in Europe, Strandja is blessed with centuries-old beech,
oak woods, breath-taking scenery, and curious rock formations, caves and karst springs. Human civilization has left behind
hundreds of unique cultural monuments including Dolmens, Thracian shrines, and sacrificial sites, the ruins of ancient
settlements, burial mounds and tombs.

 |
Of particular interest, are the architectural heritage of Strandja, its treasury of folk songs,
rites and customs of the local people, the fire dancers’ festival in the village of Bulgari at the beginning of June, the Christian
churches in Malko Turnovo, the village of Kosti, the town of Akhtopol, the village of Brashlyan, Kalovo and Zabernovo.
Perhaps, the most impressive part of the Nature Park is the historical locality called Petrova Niva- the Strandja equivalent of Oborishte- symbol of the Bulgarians’ love of freedom.

|
|
The Park provides specialized teams of guides to take tourists on mountain excursions,
ecological and ornithological trips. There are sports and cultural itineraries from the seaside to the heart of the Nature
Park, which can be reached on foot, by car, on horseback, by boat or combined. Accommodation is available at family
pensions or at private rentals.
