Dobrich is situated on the Dobrudja plateau at an altitude of 220 m. With its population of 105 000 it is the main administrative, economic and cultural centre in one of the most fertile regions in this country called the “granary of Bulgaria”. Dobrich sprang up in the 15th century as a centre of agriculture and transport. As early as then, it was one of the most vibrant market towns in the region. Until 1882 Dobrich was called Hadzhioglu Bazardzhik after the name of a rich merchant Hadzhioglu Bakal, who owned a big inn here.

One of the most picturesque parts in Dobrich is the old town which has been restored and turned into a tourist attraction. The three-nave church Saint George built in 1868 is well preserved up to day. Its richly decorated iconostasis is a genuine masterpiece of wood-carving and icon painting. One can also visit the memorial complex dedicated to the great Bulgarian writer Yordan Yovkov, who is considered a classic for his immortal short stories and plays.
Dobrich is a big industrial centre. The food industry accounts for half of the volume of the industrial production. The local enterprises work mainly with local raw materials. The other branches of industry such as the production of leather and fur clothes, footwear, textiles and upholstery are also developing dynamically.

Machine building is very important for the development of Dobrich. It is closely linked with the development of agriculture in the region by manufacturing agricultural machines and spare parts for them.
