The town of Kavarna is in the southern part of the Dobrudja Plateau, 2 km north of the steep Black Sea coast. The high cliffs are made of Sarmatian limestone with caves carved into it and two valleys forming the picturesque localities Chirakman, Zeleni Nos and Dyavolski Rid. The monk seal inhabits the sea and the caves at the rocky cape. It is a rare representative of the Black Sea fauna. Kavarna sprang up on the place of the ancient Greek town of Bizone. In ancient times they built a fortress here used in succession by the Thracians, Romans, Byzantines and Bulgarians.

In the 14th century Karvouna was the main town of the semi-independent Dobrudja rulers - the boyars Balik, Dobrotitsa and Ivailo. Later the town adopted its present name of Kavarna.
Today Kavarna is a centre of a rich agricultural region where they grow mainly wheat, corn, sunflower, beans, vines, fruit trees and vegetables.
