It is 18 km west of the town of Silistra. As early as the 19th century ornithologists from Europe called Srebarna “the Eldorado of Bulgarian birds”. Today the exotic lake vegetation is the place where over 180 different bird species build their nests, hatch their young ones and 99 of the species are permanent inhabitants of this bird sanctuary. One of the rare species to be seen here is the “curly-headed” pelican. Bird watchers may have the chance to have a glimpse of the royal eagle, the little cormorant, the sea eagle and others.

Large flocks of geese, ducks and other water birds get together and rise up in the sky to fly away during migration or when they get ready to spend the winter. Tourists who happen to visit the biospheric reserve at this time of the year can not remain indifferent to the magnificent view they can watch with specially provided optical equipment. One can hardly forget the fantastic view of a morning in Srebarna and the exciting metamorphoses of nature.

Tourists can join a trip to Srebarna Nature Reserve. One of the stops is at the picturesque Holy Trinity Church (1846) near the town of Alfatar. Its well preserved murals dating back to the National Revival Period were executed by the well-known icon painters from Tryavna Dosyu Koyuv and Angel Zografov. In the early evening twilight tourists can enjoy a visit to a fishermen’s settlement on the banks of the river Danube. They will be invited to taste the delicious fish soup prepared on the spot by local fishermen or take a boat for a romantic boat trip on the Danube - the northern border of Bulgaria and the second longest river in Europe.
Srebarna was entered in the list of biospheric reserves under the aegis of UNESCO in 1977 and six years later, in 1983 it was added to the list of world cultural and nature heritage.
